We’re in love! We arrived in Bergen from Voss on a perfect summer’s day and fell in love with the city - at least the area where we are staying which is the Port of Bergen. Our hotel, like so many buildings around the port, stands right in the water, all rather Venetian. It is cosmopolitan, relaxed and yes there are lots of tourists but it is so picturesque and it was such a balmy day - we’re suckers for a good sea breeze! It struck us as a delightful combination of Salamanca Place and San Fransisco - only different! It is a port embraced by steep wooded hills. Along Bryggen, the wharf, are rows of quaint old colourful timber buildings - these are preserved wharf houses. Hidden behind that vibrant facade is a maze of alleyways and courtyards. There are restaurants galore of course but a mish-mash of locals and tourists promenade the wharf front - anything goes! We visited the fish market where we ogled fish we had never seen before and wished we could try it all. The afternoon we spent wandering along the waterfront eyes all agog drinking it in. We simply have to come back.
That night we dined in our hotel’s restaurant on local seafood - me shellfish bisque and Lindsay hake, gulped down right on the edge of the water. Tomorrow we need to do some washing and repacking ready for Iceland the following evening but we are definitely going out to explore a little more.
